Gastrointestinal Disorders and Ayurvedic Care

Gastrointestinal (GI) disorders are conditions that affect the digestive system, including the esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas, and gallbladder. These conditions can range from occasional digestive discomfort to chronic disorders that impact nutrient absorption, metabolism, and overall health. Common symptoms include indigestion, bloating, acidity, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, and changes in bowel habits.

According to Ayurveda, digestive health is closely linked to the strength of Agni (digestive fire). When digestion becomes impaired, toxins known as Ama may accumulate in the body, contributing to various digestive and systemic health concerns. Ayurvedic treatment focuses on restoring digestive balance, improving metabolism, and addressing the root cause of the disorder.

Common Gastrointestinal Conditions

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

A functional digestive disorder characterized by abdominal discomfort, bloating, gas, and altered bowel habits such as constipation, diarrhea, or a combination of both. Stress and dietary factors often play a significant role in symptom aggravation.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

A chronic condition in which stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus, causing heartburn, acid reflux, chest discomfort, and irritation of the esophageal lining.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

A group of chronic inflammatory conditions affecting the digestive tract, primarily including Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Symptoms may include abdominal pain, diarrhea, fatigue, and weight loss.

Celiac Disease

An autoimmune condition in which the ingestion of gluten triggers damage to the small intestine, affecting digestion and nutrient absorption.

Diverticular Disease

A condition involving small pouches that develop in the intestinal wall. When these pouches become inflamed or infected, symptoms such as abdominal pain, fever, and digestive disturbances may occur.

Gastritis and Peptic Ulcers

Inflammation of the stomach lining or the development of ulcers within the stomach or upper intestine. Common symptoms include burning stomach pain, nausea, bloating, and indigestion.
