Skin Health in Ayurveda
Skin is considered the external reflection of internal health in Ayurveda. As the largest organ of the body, the skin (Twak) is closely connected with Dosha balance (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha), blood tissue (Rakta Dhatu), digestion (Agni), metabolism, and toxin accumulation (Ama).
Ayurveda views skin disorders as conditions that arise due to internal imbalances along with external factors such as diet, lifestyle, stress, environmental exposure, and improper skin care. Ayurvedic management focuses on restoring balance through personalized diet, lifestyle correction, herbal remedies, detoxification therapies, and external treatments.
Common Skin Conditions
1. Acne
Acne occurs due to blocked pores, excess oil production, inflammation, and bacterial activity. Ayurveda relates acne to imbalance of Pitta and Kapha Doshas, along with impaired digestion and accumulation of toxins.
2. Eczema
Eczema is an inflammatory skin condition characterized by dryness, itching, redness, and irritation. Ayurveda associates eczema with disturbances in Vata and Pitta Doshas, affecting skin moisture.
3. Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a chronic condition causing thick, red, scaly patches on the skin. Ayurveda considers it a deeper imbalance involving Vata and Kapha Doshas, along with impaired metabolism and accumulation of metabolic waste.
4. Contact Dermatitis
Contact dermatitis occurs when the skin reacts to allergens or irritants, leading to redness, itching, and inflammation.
5. Bacterial Skin Infections
Conditions such as cellulitis and impetigo occur due to bacterial infections affecting the skin.
6. Fungal Infections
Fungal infections such as ringworm may cause itching, redness, and circular patches. Ayurveda relates fungal skin conditions mainly with Kapha and Pitta imbalance.
7. Rosacea
Rosacea causes facial redness, visible blood vessels, and small bumps, often triggered by heat, stress, or certain foods.
